DeSimone Consulting Engineers (SE) partnered with Concrete Architectural Associates (architect) and Stephen B. Jacobs Group (AOR) on the 100,000-sf, 300-key citizenM Bowery Hotel in New York’s Bowery neighborhood. This is the second New York hotel for boutique hotelier citizenM, based in Amsterdam, but its first U.S. inn using modular construction. At 21 stories (15 of them modular), it is the world’s tallest modular hotel.

The units were manufactured near Gdansk, Poland, and shipped via container vessel to the U.S. Each floor contains 20 hotel rooms constructed from 8×48-foot modules, with two 165-sf rooms and a central corridor per module. DeSimone’s design team had to fit the 246-foot-tall structure inside a building envelope originally developed for a cast-in-place concrete structure.+
