Welcome to our Bi-Monthly General Public Newsletter

From the Team...

What a month, with 623 new members coming online.  This has been our biggest month by far and BIO now has over 2300 members available for you to connect with.

The last few weeks have seen a slow down in some of our more prominent markets and general feedback is that most members are very thankful for the  BER and Social Housing project initiatives.  These projects are currently bridging the gap in a time that would have seen al ot of financial  pressure placed on many organisations.

The good news is that there is light at the end of the tunnel.  Many of our members are reporting multiple projects in the final stages of approval and we look foward to seeing those filter through.

Building Industry Online are very excited to announce our partnering with the North Queensland Toyota Cowboys Adopt-A-School program.  Supporting the Cathedral Junior School [Townsville] and upcoming front rower, JamesTamou. The objective of the program is to give schools in the local community an opportunity to utilise their 'adopted' Cowboy as a role model fortheir students.  The programs allows for the Toyota Cowboys to get involved in curriculum activites, sporting clinics, presentation nights, school assemblies and a variety of other school community activities.  Jimmy in May signed a 3 year contract with the NQ Toyota Cowboys, we are looking forward to watching his form develop.

This month we introduce two of our new members who have some excellent products and services on offer as well as keep you in the loop of some interesting, up and coming events.

Do you have a project that needs doing at home?  Why not register it with us for FREE!.  With access to over 2000 members we are well positioned to help you  find the right contractors to assist.  Click here to register now!.

Please enjoy this month’s issue and if you have any suggestions on topics you would like discussed or investigated please send them through to info@buildingindustryonline.com.au .

For our BIO Industry Members!! - Did you know that we do a newsletter just for you?

With a broad cross section of legislative, government and industry updates as well as information to keep  you in the loop of current events.  The industry newsletter is a must have for all active participants.  To register for our industry newsletter click here.  or email us a info@buildingindustryonline.com.au.

FLINDERS MALL REDEVELOPMENT

The redevelopment of Flinders Street is progressing as planned.  Works in the main section under construction, from Denham Street to Stokes Street, is coming to a milestone with the actual road building starting in mid-May.

Construction fencing has started appearing in the section between Stanley Street and Stokes Street, to isolate demolition work.  For example, a fountain and some picnic tables have been demolished and more street furniture will disappear shortly.

It is expected that Flinders Street’s redevelopment will be completed by November 2010, in time for the Christmas trading period, with minor cosmetic works remaining in isolated areas.  Work on the upper and lower sections of Stokes Street will be completed in the New Year 2011.

To liven up the street, the construction fence is displaying children’s artworks created during the Perc Tucker Regional Gallery’s Play Lunch exhibit, currently on show.  And local artist, Janne Bogomiakova, is painting a 4m x 7m  tropical jungle mural next to the Flinders Street Information Centre, what used to be the entrance to Dimmey’s Arcade.

In the mean time, businesses continue to trade.  Did you know there was 213 traders in the CBD, including 34 eateries, 31 fashion boutiques, 24 specialty stores, 17 hair, health and beauty places, 8 places for arts and culture, 6 home and giftware shops, 5 jewellers, etc.

With street parking available,  come and experience the changes in the CBD.

SAFEHOME : A Free Service for Tenants and Property Owners

A fire can have devastating consequences to lives, families, personal property and dwellings.

Do you know what practical steps you can take to reduce the risk of a fire in your house or unit? Do Property Owners know their fire risks? Do your tenants know fire-safety behaviour to minimise the risk of a fire?

The Queensland Government, through the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service (QFRS), offers a free Safehome visit. Safehome is the QFRS flagship community relations program, which is sponsored by NRMA Insurance, to help owners and tenants save property and lives.

When invited by the resident of the home or unit (owner occupier or tenant), firefighters will conduct a fire and safety audit. Once the hazards are identified, the occupier can take steps to reduce or eliminate the risks.

As part of the service, QFRS firefighters will advise on fire safety and other safety issues including:

  • The optimal positioning and installation of smoke alarms;
  • Maintaining smoke alarms to make sure that they work when needed;
  • Avoiding kitchen fires, which are the main source of home and unit fires in Queensland;
  • Safe storage of chemicals;
  • Using power boards and electrical appliances safely; and
  • Reducing the fire load in, under and around dwellings.

In addition, during the visit firefighters will provide clients with a free Safehome kit which includes a safety checklist, manual for drawing up a fire escape plan, and information about first aid and natural hazards such as storms, lightning and cyclones.

If you in an area serviced by volunteer rural firefighters, the Safehome visit will be conducted in a different way. A firefighter will not visit the home or unit but a Safehome Kit, including a safety checklist, will be posted together with a Bushfire Preparedness Kit and a letter providing information about the nearest fire station.

Only the person living in the dwelling can request a Safehome visit. If the house or unit is tenanted, the tenant must request the Safehome visit.

To request a booking, phone 1300 369 003 or go online to www.fire.qld.gov.au and search Safehome.

TIPS FOR SURVIVING A RENOVATION....

You’ve bought a renovation property, worked out your budget and timeframe, and you’re ready for action. There are two possible conclusions to the venture: it could prove a fun challenge, or an unmitigated nightmare.

To prevent the nightmare, remember the following:

  • Unless you have a very good relationship with yourself, your partner, family, dog, cat, and rabbit; you don’t mind mess; and you have the mental strength of a giant, don’t live in a renovation while you do it.
  • If you’re harvesting fruit with your own labour, make it fun.
  • Play to your strengths. Ask yourself, ‘Will it pay me more to do it myself, or hire someone who could do the work quicker?’ Recognise what you’re good at – perhaps finding things cheap; or talking a property up to a valuer – and get someone else to do the rest.
  • Startup by drawing up a wish list. Then go through it with your budget in hand and cross off everything you can’t afford.
  • Remember sod’s law: sometimes things just go wrong. More often, things go wrong in older properties. The bigger the property; the bigger the problem.
  • Determine precisely how much you have to spend to add a decent amount of value. If youspend $20,000 but increase value by only $10, 000, you’ve not achieved anything.

Testimonial

As a member of the general public with very little knowledge of the local building industry, BIO provided me with a very simple interface to broadcast out to interested builders my home extension project. I did not need to search the phonebook and ring around many builders to finally find a few who might be interested. Very importantly, BIO operating within the building industry increased my confidence of finding reputable builders"
John Murray, General Public Member November, 2009
