WITH a Federal election tipped to be called as early as this week for an August 21 poll and talk of a need for increased mining taxes to return a fairer share of revenues to Australian people, Investor thought it was appropriate to revisit a 2008 study called Taxation and Expenditure Balance in Greater North Queensland. The study, by consultants AEC Group on behalf of Townsville City Council, found Greater North Queensland - defined as the statistical divisions of Far North, Northern, North West and Mackay - paid out $2 billion more in taxes per year than it received in government spending.

Tenders called for Whitsunday Coast Airport upgrade and refurbishment - 16/06/2010

The State Government is inviting tenders to upgrade and refurbish the Whitsunday Coast Airport passenger terminal, Minister for Infrastructure and Planning Stirling Hinchliffe announced today. Mr Hinchliffe said the call for tenders followed the Bligh Government's allocation of $7 million for major works. He said the successful tenderer would undertake significant works at the existing terminal, including the expansion and reconfiguration of the check-in area, an improved baggage claim facility and an air-conditioned departure lounge.

A $1.1BILLION mining project near Moranbah that will create up to 1000 jobs has this week moved one step closer to construction.
