MECC to host first QME Mining Industry Conference

Mackay is set to throw out the welcome mat to thousands of visitors for one of the most highly-anticipated events on the mining industry calendar the Queensland Mining and Engineering Exhibition (QME).

A key player at this year’s QME is Mackay Regional Council’s Mackay Entertainment & Convention Centre (MECC) which is hosting the inaugural QME Mining Industry Conference on Tuesday, July 27 and Wednesday, July 28.

The state-of-the-art facility only 400 metres from the exhibition will host over 100 delegates and a range of speakers and presenters, including senior Queensland government representatives, mining industry executives, international experts and mine site managers.

The conference will tackle topics such as Industry Status and Future Direction, Global Insight and Export Opportunities and Sustainability through Industry Best Practices.

QME was last held in July 2008 and at that time Mackay didn’t have a facility that met the requirements needed for this particular conference. However construction of the MECC, offers a first class venue in close proximity to the thousands of visitors and delegates who will attend QME.

Council’s Economic Development program will be an exhibitor at the Mining Industry conference, providing delegates with information on the region’s investment potential, strategic planning and other local government topics.

Mackay Regional Council Mayor Col Meng said as the largest mining expo of its kind in Australia, QME makes a significant economic contribution to the Mackay region and enhances our international profile as a tourist and business destination.

“This event highlights Mackay’s role as a service hub for the resources industry and gains national exposure for the entire region,” he said.

“Council is fully committed to maintaining the positive cycle of growth, investment and development here and our industries are one of the important keys to long-term sustainability,”

“We can only benefit from a buoyant economy and the increased trade opportunity derived from the continual strength of the mining industry.”

Economic Development portfolio councillor David Perkins said the mining and engineering services sector continued to create local growth opportunities which have caught the eye of many potential investors and financiers.

“This region is a world-class mining province that’s home to the Bowen Basin and with more than 30 mines in operation across the Bowen and Galilee basins and a number of new mines planned, increased production will continue to fuel demand from this world-class sector,” he said.

Cr Perkins said events such as QME added value to the local economy, opened doors for more investment and placed the national spotlight on our region.
